Roll it, roll it and let it shine. Bravo!!
We were warmly welcomed with these chants by the students and staff of Let it Shine Academy (LISA) on the 14th of December 2022.
LISA provides free secondary education for children from low-income households. They also offer free education at the Special Correctional Centre for Boys in Oregun, Lagos.
The purpose of our visit was to lend support towards ending the issue of out-of-school children, a cause that LISA has been fighting for years.
The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) estimates that about 20 million Nigerian children are unenrolled in school as of October 2022.
And according to the World Bank, Nigeria is currently experiencing adverse learning poverty in which 70 percent of 10-year-olds cannot understand a simple sentence in English or perform basic numeracy tasks.
We spoke to the children about the importance of letting their light shine regardless of the situation they find themselves in. This was followed by the affirmations
A donation was made to the school alongside gifts for the children.
We had a quick tour and got insights into the work being done by LISA.
Speaking on Duplo’s visit, Dammy Feyide, Founder & Executive Director of LISA expressed gratitude to Team Duplo and urged the children to keep shining their lights. Indeed, we shine brighter by lighting others.
There’s still a lot to be done to get Nigerian children into schools and at Duplo, we’re committed to doing our part, said Yele Oyekola, our CEO & Co-Founder.
